The term high-intensity interval training, or H.I.I.T., is thrown around a lot in the fitness industry, and for good reason: it works.
But, what exactly is it?
Essentially, a H.I.I.T. workout involves a series of short, maximum-effort bursts of activity followed by brief periods of recovery. For example, sprinting your fastest for 30 seconds, resting for one minute, and repeating for several times is a common H.I.I.T. round. String together 3 to 6 H.I.I.T rounds, each with different exercises, and your training for the day is complete.
One of the reasons it’s so popular is because it allows you to burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time possible. In fact, a 25-minute H.I.I.T. workout has the ability to burn as many, or more, calories as a 60-90-minute moderate cardio session.
Additionally, H.I.I.T. workouts are thought to increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours after the workout, which means you’ll be burning fat even as you’re eating and sleeping. And there’s pretty much nothing better than that.
Finally, regular H.I.I.T. sessions will seriously improve the strength of your heart. One 2006 study found that participants who completed eight weeks of H.I.I.T. sessions could bicycle twice as long as they could prior to those eight weeks while maintaining the same pace. So you’ll have a lot more stamina to take on life’s challenges.
But if going full-speed ahead sounds more challenging than you think you’re ready for, think again! H.I.I.T. mostly utilizes compound bodyweight movements rather than excessive equipment, so it’s easy for you to modify your workout to your current fitness level. And you’re always welcome to take a break or request a modification from your teacher at anytime. H.I.I.T. workouts can be intense, but you’ll fee nothing but support from classmates in our welcoming, no-shame culture.
At Total Woman, we take advantage of H.I.I.T.’s calorie-burning efficiency by developing professionally-trained H.I.I.T. sessions that are only 25 minutes long. That means you can reap all the benefits of an hours-long workout in less time than it takes to eat breakfast in the morning, and you’ll still be burning fat for days to come.
