One of the healthiest habits we can develop—staying properly hydrated—is often one we look at as an option rather than a necessity. Good for body, mind and spirit, getting our daily-recommended water intake is key for a fit and healthy lifestyle, and essential for our bodies to function properly. Not only is dehydration damaging to our bodies but it deprives us of the many benefits that consuming water offers, including:
+ A clearer, brighter and more youthful looking complexion.
+ Increased energy levels, mental function, concentration, and physical performance
+ Improved digestion and flushing of toxins in your body
+ Aiding in weight loss by helping to suppress the appetite, reducing cravings, and boost metabolism
+ Elimination or reduction of headaches
+ Prevention of joint and muscle pain
Why aren't you getting enough?
In our crazy hectic always on the go lives it easy to put things off unless it becomes a habit, and unless it is a priority, we do not make time for it. So this month's challenge is meant to do just that. For the next 30-days we challenge you to commit to increasing and maintaining your daily H2O intake. It is all about consistency. By the end of the month this should become second nature, and a habit that lives on long after the challenge ends. Once you start you may be amazed to see how much your body will actively start to crave it.
How much water should you drink?
Although there are many generalized recommendations, it is important to understand that there is no one size fits all when it comes to the amount of water we should be drinking on a daily basis. The right amount for each individual depends on gender, body weight, activity level and frequency, and the climate where you are. Basic Guidelines for water consumption recommend that you consume half to one ounce per pound of body weight each day. And, it is also important to note that during the hot summer months your body will likely need more than your recommended intake each day.
How can I make sure to drink more water each day?
+ Download one of the many great water intake apps that are available on your smartphone to help calculate your recommended water intake and track you daily consumption.
+ Start off small. If you aren't drinking a lot of water already, your daily recommended amount may seem unattainable. Work your way up by increasing it by 8 oz. each day until you reach your goal.
+ Substitute your juices, sodas, etc. for water. If you just can't do without that cup of coffee remember that those won't count towards your water intake
+ Spice it up. Not a fan of water or getting bored with it? Drink decaffeinated teas or infuse it with lemon, cucumber, strawberry, mint, basil (the options are endless) to make it extra tasty and nutritious.
+ Set goals throughout the day like "I'll drink a quarter of this bottle by noon." Or, pair it with activities. When you moisturize your face, drink water. When you are watching TV, take a drink.
+ Pick your glass. It may seem silly, but the container you drink your water out of can make all the difference when it comes to reaching your goal. You may be surprised to find that you consume more if you drink your water out of one container versus another ... and add a straw if it helps!
