Beginner’s Guide to Spa Etiquette

Sauna at Total Woman Gym + Spa

It may seem like time flies, but with 168 hours in a week, it’s important that we make time for much deserved “me” time.  With these prioritized hours, we treat ourselves to exercise and self-care for optimal health and longevity.

Enjoying a spa service once or several times a month helps relieve stress and pain, and rejuvenates the mind and body. It’s the perfect way to slow time down.

If you’re new to the spa, welcome! You are about to experience pure bliss. In order for your experience to be the best, here are several useful tips that will help to make your spa service that much better.

Spa Tips and Etiquette

Arrive early

You don’t want to miss a single minute of your service, so it’s important you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your service time. This allows for a stress-free check-in (and even sauna time!). There is nothing worse than rushing to relax.

Turn off your phone

This is YOU time. That means disconnecting from technology and connecting to calm. Turn off your phone, hide it away in your locker, put on your robe, and offer this quiet, device-free time as a gift to yourself.

Speak up

Massage therapists and estheticians are trained and certified to deliver results, whether a therapeutic massage or skin-correcting facial. However, every person is different so it’s absolutely expected and okay to speak up about any preferences, questions, or medical issues.  Your spa technician will ask if you are comfortable, if the pressure is right, but it’s absolutely okay to let the therapist know your needs so that your time is beneficial and enjoyable.  Don’t hesitate to share your preferences or specific requests.

To dress or undress?

Typically, massages are performed with the client undressed and fully draped. This allows for the massage therapist to work on various muscles without any obstruction. The therapist is trained on how to drape to maintain your privacy.

During a facial, the esthetician will be cleansing your skin, neck, and décolleté, as well as performing a shoulder, neck, and hand/arm massage. As such, you will be given a spa wrap and directed to remove garments and bra from the waist up, as you will also be fully draped.

To protect your privacy, technicians will step out of the room while you disrobe and get under the drape. They will knock before opening the door and stepping into the treatment room.

Technicians are here for you. If for some reason you can’t make your appointment, it is extremely important to cancel with at least 24 hours notice so you don’t lose your service.
Schedule your spa time now so you can reap the benefits of your R&R time.   If you’ve never experienced a spa treatment, you owe it to yourself.  It’s a treat you’ll not regret.
