Kavita's Pregnancy Blog: Week 24

My Fitness Routine this Week:
I have noticed myself slowing down noticeably this last week. They say that the third trimester hits you like a truck, and since I'm only a few weeks away from that point I may be feeling the effects early. I am out of breath often as I do my daily routines, but my workouts must go on!

The main adjustment I am making this week is to slow down my cardio. The weight of my belly and the size of the baby are starting to put extra strain on my back and lungs, so I have to be careful that I am taking deep breaths and keeping my body supported.

I have been trying to go without using a pregnancy support wrap as long as possible so that I could encourage my core muscles to step up to the task of strengthening as they were needed, but my baby has grown extremely rapidly in a very short amount of time, so it may be time to invest. Pregnancy wraps are great for women who experience a lot of back pain in pregnancy, but don't neglect core work as it will help to discourage your abdominal muscles from separating, resulting in "mom belly!" More to come on that later!

The other thing I am noticing is that my little boy has been very rapidly putting on weight the last few weeks, making my appetite increase quite a bit. While I try to choose healthy options, the sudden onset of hunger definitely makes it easy to stop at a fast food drive through. I have to recommit myself to having healthy snacks ready for when these times of hunger strike so that I don't load up on greasy or sugary choices, as this often contributes to extra weight gain that doesn't automatically go away when the baby is born. Remember moms, you are eating for two, but one of you is only the size of an ear of corn at 24 weeks. You only need and extra 150-300 calories per day if you started your pregnancy at a healthy weight which is an extra cup of yogurt, an apple with peanut butter, or a small handful of nuts. Yes, this is not the time to diet, but it's also not the time to give in to all your cravings!

 

My Beauty Routine this Week:The beauty product that I cannot get enough of right now is... drum roll please... SLEEP. Sleep helps your body to recover from the day by not only restoring your energy, but by promoting healing in your skin and muscles. This is why people who don't get enough sleep can look older or weigh more than they need to! If you have invested in some good skin care products or some wonderful personal training, please do yourself a favor and get enough sleep. The results you see will be so much better!

I am exhausted all of the time. This is most likely a combination of carrying around more weight, being out of breath more often, and sleep that is not as restful. I think it is since many pregnant women toss and turn in their sleep. I am taking every opportunity I can to sneak naps into my day and I make sure to go to bed fairly early every night.

For those mommies who are in a relationship, these habits can put a damper on you and your partner's social lives. My poor husband will innocently ask me what I want to do when we are driving home from our childbirth preparation class at 9pm and I look at him like he's crazy. 9pm is the end of the day! What do you mean what do I want to do? My advice would be to really take advantage of the time you have together when you feel good. Our house is an absolute disaster, there are piles of laundry that need to be done, and I can't remember the last time I vacuumed. However, I have personally chosen to make my family a top priority when it is my choice. There are plenty of times when work, nausea, or fatigue make the choice for me, but when have time and energy and I'm with my husband, I want to make sure I am giving him the love and support that he has given to me throughout this pregnancy. I am so lucky to have a loving teammate through this journey, and my biggest wish is that every pregnant woman can find someone to lean on during their journey. I have my husband, but you may have a romantic partner, mom, sibling, or best friend who will be just as good. Don't forget to let them know they are appreciated!

How I'm Feeling this Week:
I am feeling grateful this week. The 24th week of pregnancy is associated with viability of your baby, meaning that if my little boy were to decide to come early he could now survive outside of my body, granted he would need a lot of medical help. For anyone who has ever experienced difficulty with getting or keeping a pregnancy this is a HUGE milestone. Just knowing that my little guy is developed enough to be OK is an incredible reassurance.

My baby is moving around like crazy these days and kicking like he's in a Bruce Lee movie. He has been measuring on the large side, so the movements are only getting stronger and stronger!
